About Amar Singh Chamkila

Born as Dhani Ram in July 1960, Amar Singh Chamkila hailed from the village of Dugri near Ludhiana. Growing up as the youngest son of Kartar Kaur and Hari Singh Sandila, he initially aspired to become an electrician after completing his primary education at a local school. However, circumstances led him to find employment at a cloth mill in Ludhiana. But destiny pushed him into the world of music.

In the late 1970s, Dhani Ram embraced his stage name, Amar Singh Chamkila. Teaming up with vocalist Surinder Sonia, he penned and performed eight memorable duets that were compiled into the immensely successful album “Takue Te Takua” in 1980. This venture gave Chamkila overnight stardom. Subsequently, he embarked on short-lived collaborations with renowned artists such as Miss Usha Kiran and Amar Noorie. However, it was his encounter with singer Amarjot Kaur in the mid-1980s that would prove to be his most significant partnership. Not only did she become his permanent singing companion, but she also became his beloved wife. By the late 1980s, Chamkila made his name as Punjab’s most accomplished singer with over 30 stage performances per month. His music resonated deeply, especially within the rural communities of the state.
