Meet The First Actress To Wear Bikini In Hindi Film

Not Sharmila Tagore, Nutan, Zeenat Aman, Helen, Parveen Babi. But she was the first actress to wear a bikini in Hindi films. So let’s dive to know her name.

 Nalini Jaywant

When we talk about the bikini trend in Bollywood. Most of us attribute the honor to Sharmila Tagore or Zeenat Aman. However, let’s dive into the depths of cinematic history and know the truth. One of the actresses who boldly embraced the swimsuit trend in Hindi film long before it gained mainstream recognition was Nalini Jaywant. Her groundbreaking performance in Sangram (1950) captivated the audience during that time.

Before Sharmila Tagore’s era, Nalini Jaywant was a woman ahead of her time. Nalini, who happened to be the first cousin of Shobhana Samarth, shattered the rule by donning a swimsuit in the film Sangram (1950). Paired with the legendary Ashok Kumar, she mesmerized audiences with her confidence and beauty, paving the way for future bikini moments. Notably, Nargis also joined the swimwear bandwagon in Awara (1951), challenging societal norms.

Delving into Marathi cinema, Meenakshi Shirodkar, became a true trendsetter. In the film, Brahmachari (1938), Meenakshi, is the grandmother of actresses Shilpa and Namrata Shirodkar. It was in the enchanting song “Yamuna jali khelu khel” she provoked Master Vinayak, her co-star. The song garnered immense popularity. Meenakshi and Master Vinayak collaborated on several films, including Brandichi Batli (1939), Ardhangi / Ghar Ki Rani (1940), Amrut (1941), Mazhe Bal (1943), and more.

So it’s clear that Sharmila Tagore was not the first actress to embrace the bikini on-screen. Nalini Jaywant’s trailblazing act in Sangram (1950) and Meenakshi Shirodkar’s captivating presence in Brahmachari (1938) deserve accolades for their boldness and courage back then when hardly any actress dared to go bold. These women set the stage for future actresses to break free from societal bonds and redefine fashion norms.
